Project abstract

The aim of the project is to give modern assessment of the input from coastal erosion to sediemnt budget of the Baltic Sea. The main objectives of the study are the follow ing:

  • To supplement and clarify the available data on th e magnitude of the coastal retreat at the Southeast shore of the Baltic Sea based on the comparison of digitized coastal data from aerial photography, satellite imagery and topographic maps from the 19th century to the present (a desk analysis for the coast of the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation);
  • To carry out a full-scale survey a nd coastal-marine morpho-lithodynamic studies of the shore of the Kaliningrad Oblast in order to determine the morphodynamic features, additions and refinement of the available fragmentary information on itslithological structure and composition of the sediments carried outside the wave collapse zone;
  • To summariz e the results of studies on fluxes of suspended matter in the South- Eastern Baltic with the aim of testing the hypothesis of the formation of sandbars (in particular the Vistula Spit) by means of bilateral feeding by counter-current long-shorsediment flows;
  • To identify the most vulnerable and stable parts of the shore (from the point of view of coastal erosion) within the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation based on the results of field survey and desk analysis of remote sensing data;
  • To carry out aerial photography of the coastal strip in key areas of the shore of the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation with the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle to obtain quantitative information on the current features of the state of the shore and the subsequent interpretation of the morphometry of the shore profiles on a satellite image;
  • To carry out a d etailed calculation of the volume of material eroded from the shore of the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation, taking into account possible spatial and temporal variations of these characteristics on the basis of data on the shoreline retreat within centuries (from the beginning of the 19th century) and modern data for selected key sites;
  • To conduct a refinement of estima tes of volumes of erosion for all the sandy shores of the Baltic (South Sweden, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Gulf of Finland), using an analogy with the shore of the Kaliningrad region;
  • To estimate the value of the total volume eroded from the shores of 9 Baltic countries and to assess the contribution of each of the regions to the sedimentation budget of the Baltic Sea
